Burr Height

The world's most advanced and efficient protractor system With < 1 µm accuracy

What is a burr height measurement system?

A burr height measurement system is a specialised inspection tool that quantifies the microscopic burr—the raised metal ridge left after slitting or punching—and the related edge bend in coil or sheet products. Unlike manual callipers or stylus profilometers, modern systems employ line-confocal optics to record the entire edge profile every 1 mm along the strip edge, delivering:

  • Sub-micron repeatability (< 1 µm) – meets automotive and appliance appearance specs.

  • Non-contact scanning – no physical wear and no risk of scratching polished surfaces.

  • Instant statistical reports – SPC metrics such as Ba, Bp, Bt, Bv and standard deviation.

  • Digital traceability – PDF protocols and raw CSV data for each coil and slit.

  • System check against certified calibration specimen.

Why control burr height?

BenefitImpact on production
Longer tooling lifeEven burr ≤ 5 µm prevents premature blade re-grinds.
Lower scrap rateEarly detection of edge defects cuts rework and rejects.
ISO 9001 documentationAutomatic PDF reports satisfy customer audits.
Better line efficiency30 s cycle keeps laboratory-grade control on the shop floor.

How the EP 100+ burr height measurement system works

  1. Load & Clamp – press the left pedal to lift the measuring rolls, slide the strip to the rear stop, release to clamp.

  2. Scan – press the right pedal; driven rolls move the edge under the LCI sensor while GoHMI streams the live burr-height curve.

  3. Analyse – 1 mm sampling rate creates a detailed profile; built-in SPC engine grades pass/fail.

  4. Report & Store – click Generate PDF or export CSV/XLSM; filenames are auto-labelled with coil, slit and edge IDs.

Total cycle time: ≈ 30 s per 1 meter strip sample.

Maintenance in one minute

Wipe the optics with a lens cloth, vacuum dust from the roll guards and add a drop of silicone to the drive belt if it squeaks—no scheduled service contract required.
